In the fast-evolving world of technology, businesses are under constant pressure to maintain efficiency, security, and scalability. For Steatite, a UK-based leader in the design and supply of rugged computing, secure communications, and battery solutions, these challenges were all too familiar. With a growing demand for digital services and a lean IT team, the company faced mounting pressure to manage infrastructure, updates, backups, and security—without letting day-to-day operations suffer.

That pressure ultimately led Steatite to a pivotal decision: transitioning to a cloud-first strategy.

The Challenge: Limited Resources, Growing Demands

Steatite’s IT team was tasked with managing a wide array of responsibilities, from maintaining on-premise servers and handling backups to troubleshooting end-user issues and ensuring cybersecurity compliance. As the company expanded and the complexity of its operations increased, the workload became unmanageable. Routine tasks consumed a significant portion of the team’s time, leaving little room for strategic planning or innovation.

Moreover, maintaining physical infrastructure was becoming costly and inefficient. Hardware refresh cycles, unpredictable maintenance needs, and limited scalability were all contributing to a growing burden on the IT department.

“It felt like we were constantly firefighting,” says a member of Steatite’s IT team. “We were spending more time reacting to issues than proactively improving our systems.”

The Solution: Embracing Cloud Technologies

To relieve this pressure and position itself for future growth, Steatite initiated a cloud migration strategy in collaboration with a trusted cloud services provider. The move was gradual but deliberate, beginning with the migration of email and collaboration tools to Microsoft 365, followed by the transition of critical business applications and data storage to Microsoft Azure.

The choice of a hybrid cloud model gave Steatite the flexibility to maintain certain on-premise systems while leveraging the scalability and reliability of the cloud for the rest of its operations.

Immediate Benefits: Reduced Workload, Improved Uptime

The shift to the cloud delivered immediate relief for the IT team. Key tasks such as system updates, patch management, and backups were now automated or managed through the cloud provider’s platform. This freed up valuable time for the IT staff, allowing them to focus on user support, process improvement, and longer-term projects.

Disaster recovery and business continuity planning also saw dramatic improvements. With data now securely stored in the cloud and replicated across multiple geographic regions, Steatite significantly reduced the risk of data loss or downtime.

Security, a major concern in any IT environment, was also enhanced through cloud-native tools, such as Azure Security Center, multi-factor authentication, and conditional access policies. These solutions provided enterprise-grade protection without the need for constant manual oversight.

Long-Term Impact: Agility and Innovation

Perhaps the most transformative impact of the move was the shift in mindset within the IT team. With operational tasks largely offloaded, the team could focus on more strategic initiatives, such as process automation, digital transformation projects, and exploring new technologies to support business goals.

The scalability of the cloud environment also enabled Steatite to quickly respond to changing business needs, such as onboarding new users, deploying applications, or expanding into new markets. What used to take days or weeks with physical infrastructure could now be accomplished in hours.
